The rehabilitation of a 1775 building for residential use. The functional core of the project is the incorporation of a second vertical circulation core, which facilitates an optimal floor plan distribution while adhering to the minimum dimensions permitted by the building's protected status. The dwellings are organized around a service core (kitchen, bathroom, and storage) that establishes a spatial hierarchy and interconnects the different living areas. On the third floor, the removal of a section of the roof allows for the creation of terraces, alleviating the typically enclosed nature of attic spaces. The floor structures, featuring timber in good condition but with insufficient load-bearing capacity, are reinforced with a lightweight concrete composite slab. This provides a highly cost-effective reinforcement solution that preserves the exposed beams while maximizing clear ceiling height.
